Stillness into Movement,  Movement into Stillness -  Meditation and Yoga for Creatives

 

A half day exploratory workshop with guided meditation and all level hatha yoga in preparation for ‘meditation in action’. Bring relaxation to breath and body inviting intuition to guide us in simple movements coming from hatha and restorative yoga.

Time: 9:30 am - 1:30 pm daily

 

Location:  Halifax Shambhala Centre, 1084 Tower Rd, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Equipment: Bring a yoga mat, blanket, yoga block and belt, water bottle and small snack for this exploratory workshop.

Contemplative Approaches to Spontaneous Brush

 

All level and intermediate participants will (continue to) explore personal gestures on various Japanese Washis. Beginning with short guided meditations, using inks, and watercolour or acrylics we will explore a "first thought, best thought" approach to mark-making. Traditional and unusual equipment used as drawing/painting implements will lead to surprising and fresh works.

MATERIALS

Equipment and Materials to be brought by the student:

  • brushes - one small round, one flat, one pre-soaked calligraphy dark-haired  brush. 

  • White plastic tablecloth, cut in 2

  • newsprint 15 sheets

  • 2 plastic water containers

  • 6 pots/jars with lids for ink & washes

  • spray bottle

  • 2’ cut branch

  • duct tape for brush extension

  • aluminum foil

  • water colour tubes and/or liquid acrylics: primary red, blue and yellow plus your favourite transparents.

All other equipment and materials (Japanese Washi papers, ink, etc.) will be provided.

All level workshop and introduction to small format Japanese papers


Short guided meditations create an atmosphere for creative exploration using inks, and watercolour with a variety of Japanese washi papers, natural imagery. Patterning, mark-making and collage will lead to artist books and cards.

Participants MUST bring:

  • ruler

  • snap off knife

  • cutting mat

  • toothbrush

  • small spray bottle

  • 2 water containers,

  • 3-5 small plastic containers with lids for washes

  • 3-4 pieces of aluminum foil

  • masking tape

  • brushes- 1 flat for washes, 1 pre-soaked round calligraphy brush

 

Materials Provided:

  • High quality sumi inks

  • water colours

  • imported Japanese washis
