The Language of Flowers Classes - Ikebana Study groups

This class is offered in the spirit of the generosity of my sensei, master ikebanist, Madame Seibi Watanabe, age 96. It is through her artistry, and great skill that she emanates the best in warriorship in a living, contemporary context based on the Sogetsu School of arranging. Any merit I have gained is because of her relentless kindness.

Winter practice will concentrate on the basics of heaven, earth and "human" elements, supporting materials, mostly in suiban and other low vases, followed by nageire, and other vessels. We will share our love of local plants and flowers as spring arrives accessing them from a local grower.

We begin and end our classes with short periods of guided meditation. Demonstrations from the Five Book Curriculum will be offered and then practiced by new and seasoned students. Time permitting, intermediate Sogetsu students may additionally create a second arrangement* according to their experience/workbook. Viewing, critique and suggested adjustments precede the dismantling of your arrangement. You can take your materials home and practice re-creating.
